ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The proposal for a multi-story conference center and hotel in downtown Ann Arbor has been withdrawn after drawing ire and criticism from locals.

Sports Illustrated Resorts reportedly pulled its proposal after a Monday night informational meeting where many locals voiced their opposition and criticized its appropriateness for the downtown area.

Four Ann Arbor City Council members said they would vote down the proposal.

Monday’s meeting was intended to inform residents of the proposed building and its benefits to Ann Arbor.

If it had been built, the hotel and conference center would have been on the city-owned Kline lot along Ashley Street behind Main Street businesses.

Mlive reported that Sports Illustrated Resorts CEO Chris Schroeder said that the company will look for another location in Tree Town and that the opposition of a few isn’t reflective of all residents.

“Because you think a building is too big or you don’t want more people coming to town is an irresponsible response to a project that could have helped pay for affordable housing, parks, schools, roads, etc.,” he said, per Mlive.
