The truth behind women’s health

Learn what you can do to make sure your health is in tip-top shape

May is the perfect time of year for many things from planting flowers to spring cleaning, but it’s also a great time to pause and think about your health, because May is National Women’s Health Month.

Do you know about the truth behind women’s health? Faye Geroche, with CCA Health Michigan, appeared on “Live In The D” to share what you need to know.

First, she talked to the belief that women live longer than men.

“Women tend to out live men by 6 years,” said Geroche. “That is because women tend to visit the doctor’s office more often. However, women may encounter mobility problems as they age that can compromise their safety and quality of life.”

Risks can be reduced by staying physically active.

Another thing that’s important to a woman’s health is their close friends. By maintaining close friendships, it helps people feel less isolated which can lead to depression and anxiety. Those conditions can have serious health implications, which is why Geroche says a strong friendship support group can help your overall health.

Do women have a higher risk for heart disease? Geroche says that’s true and false because heart disease is a major cause of death in Detroit for both men and women. Women can show different symptoms that may be indicators of heart disease, but are ignored because they are not “common”, like pain in the chest or pain radiating through the left arm. Geroche says it’s key to know all the symptoms to be diagnosed as early as possible.
