ROYAL OAK, Mich. – An 84-year-old woman was dressed in full cap and gown Thursday to receive her high school diploma.
Marguerite Oliver had family issues that forced her to drop out of Cass Tech back in 1946.
Oliver was the oldest of twelve children. She helped her siblings along and eventually raised her own family.
She always emphasized education so all of her daughters went on to college.
Oliver enrolled in Royal Oaks continuing education program to get her diploma.
“The GED was all right for those who had to have it but I said I’ll go the long way,” Oliver said.
After 66 years, the octogenarian received a standing ovation.
“She’s a model of what we all can do at her age when we stay active and learn as much as you can,” Oliver’s daughter, Gayle Oliver Brannon, said.
