DETROIT – If you're a true Detroiter, someone who lives, works and plays downtown, you know Detroit has a lot of great eating establishments. But, it was missing something -- that missing piece is called Wright & Company.
The newly opened eatery is located on the second floor of the brick and brownstone building on Woodward at John R, right in the heart of the revitalized downtown Detroit area. Named for the jewelry store that once sold art in the building years ago, Wright & Co., as they describe it, is a "gasto-bistro serving contemporary American small plates, craft cocktails, natural and organic wine and Michigan beer."
Although, that description doesn't do this place justice.
COCKTAILS:
Led by the owner of Corktown's Sugar House (Dave Kwiatkowski), known as one of the top specialty cocktail bars in the area, the drink menu is unstoppable. The combinations offered are drinks you won't find anywhere else, not even Sugar House. If you're not into cocktails, they offer an extensive list of craft beers and wines. Not sure what you want? The wait staff is truly impressive in finding the perfect cocktail for you. Don't be afraid to ask.
FOOD:
This is not your typical dinner place. There are no dinner rolls, or side salads. We're talking small plates.
The menu is small, but very particular, in a good way.
To start, the "snacks" section offers delectable starters for every taste. Personally, I had the fresh potato chips, which were by far the best "potato chips" I've ever had, topped with white cheddar cheese, bacon and scallions. We also had the warm dates, which sound horrible, but were actually delicious. The snack that really jumped out -- the whipped ricotta. If you're a fan of cheese, this is a must get. The ricotta comes topped with an orange honey drizzle, easily spreadable, and easily satisfying.
The main plates are just as good. If you're a seafood fan -- in my opinion -- this is the perfect place for you. The tuna tartare is phenomenal. With just enough spice, too. The poached shrimp come with this avocado mousse that will make you want avocado mousse on everything you eat.
ATMOSPHERE:
Heading to Wright & Co., I didn't really know what to expect. It sounded like a fancy, high-end place, but as I walked in, it didn't feel that way. A combo of vintage and contemporary mixed with a dazzling tin-ceiling. Tall windows on both sides, minimal lighting with a full length marble bar. The vibe is remarkably comfortable, even casual. The staff knows what they are serving, and they know how to help you find the right dish/drinks.
OVERALL:
As a Detroiter, this is very exciting. It's not just about great food, it's about great business. Wright & Co. is just the start -- hopefully bringing in more fine dining, and hopefully people who don't normally frequent the downtown area. It's a win-win for everybody. The overall experience at Wright & Co. was exceptional. Only problem: it was hot.
