1 dead after flames engulf vehicle on Southfield Freeway ramp in Dearborn

Unclear if fire killed person

DEARBORN, Mich. – One person is dead after a vehicle caught fire Saturday in Dearborn.

The car was fully engulfed in flames on the southbound Southfield Freeway ramp at Michigan Avenue. The single-vehicle crash happened around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Viewer video from the Michigan Avenue overpass shows flames bursting from a Kia along the southbound Southfield Freeway ramp. The male driver never made it out of the car.

Another angle was captured along the freeway as people walked back to their vehicles.

It appears as though the Kia slammed into a tree and burst into flames.

While the investigation is preliminary, police said the crash may have been the result of a medical emergency.

The driver's body was badly burned and will not be removed from the vehicle until the medical examiner arrives. It's unclear if the person died as a result of the fire or they were dead before the fire started.

Investigators are working to confirm the identity of the male driver.

Dearborn police and the fire department closed off the southbound ramp and the service drive.
