Father, son killed in crash on Pontiac Trail in Lyon Township

2 other young children hospitalized

LYON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A father and his young son were killed Tuesday morning in a crash on Pontiac Trail in Lyon Township that also left his two other children seriously injured.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said 36-year-old Pedro Montanez was driving his three children to Kent Lake Elementary when he lost control of his Mazda sedan.

"Preliminary, it seems that he hit a patch of ice, lost control of the vehicle, went left of center, struck a pickup truck that was pulling a trailer," said Undersheriff Michael McCabe.

The car collided with a Ford pickup truck that was hauling a landscaping trailer.

Montanez was pronounced dead at the scene. His three children were rushed to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, but 9-year-old Steven Montanez died.

His 6-year-old sister and 10-year-old brother, whose names were not released, remain hospitalized.

The pickup truck's 25-year-old driver was not hurt.

The sheriff's office said family was all wearing seat belts.
