10-year-old boy attacked by family dog in Augusta Township

Boy is in unstable condition

AUGUSTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 10-year-old Augusta Township boy is recovering after being attacked Wednesday by the family dog in their home.

Police said the boy was home alone on Stony Creek Road when dog, described as a pit bull-type breed, attacked him.

The boy was able to reach a neighbor's home for help.

“I heard something hit my door and I got up and looked and I saw him lying on the porch,” Melody Rittenhouse said. “I called 911 and my neighbor came over to help.”

The boy suffered severe injuries to his face, ear and arm. He might have bled to death if it wasn't for Northfield Township firefighter Chris Bishop.

"I just happened to be at the right place at the right time," Bishop said.

Bishop happened to working around the corner when he heard the call on his radio.

"I was more worried about controlling some of the bleeding," Bishop said. "I didn't know how long that attack had happened."

The boy was taken to CS Mott Children's Hospital.

Police said the dog is being held by the Washtenaw County Animal Control.
