17-year-old killed in double shooting over Air Jordans on Detroit's west side

1 killed, 1 shot in arm during struggle for guns in car

DETROIT – One person was killed and another person was injured Tuesday in a double shooting over Air Jordan shoes on Detroit's west side.

UPDATE: Former Grosse Pointe North HS student Corey Harris Thomas killed in shooting over shoes in Detroit

The shooting was reported at 1:56 p.m. in the 15300 block of Pinehurst Street near Fenkell Avenue and Meyers Road.

Police said two people met up with a third person Tuesday to purchase some Michael Jordan shoes. The meeting had been arranged on a social media site.

The three people got into a Jeep and, at some point, the front-seat passenger and the back-seat passenger pulled out guns, officials said.

Police said there was a struggle over the guns, and the 17-year-old man in the driver's seat was shot in the head and chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The front-seat passenger was shot in the arm and taken to a nearby hospital in an unknown condition.

Both guns were recovered by police at the scene. Police said a 19-year-old man is in custody.

The passenger in the back seat got out of the Jeep and fled, police said. Officers have not found the man, so nearby Loyola High School in Detroit was put on lockdown. The lockdown was lifted just after 4 p.m., and students were allowed to leave the building.

One student's mother said she received a frantic text message from her son.

"'A guy was laying on the ground dead. We don't know if he was ran over or shot. I'm OK. School is on lockdown, just wanted to keep you updated,'" Jeri Copeland read. "And then, I said, 'OK, is it close to the school?' He said, 'Yes, police still might be out there. Don't come and get me. I'll ask if students can leave the school.' And then he said, 'They can't leave, they're on lockdown.'"

Loyola High School sent out a text message to parents, saying, "Currently we are on a school-wide lockdown. We are all OK, but students are not permitted to leave. Any questions, call the office."
