DETROIT – Detroit police are looking for a gunman who is believed to have robbed two people just hours apart at ATMs on the city's west side.
The first victim was robbed around 9:30 a.m. in broad daylight. He was walking toward his vehicle, which was parked at the curb, when the gunman approached him.
In a similar incident 12 hours later, a woman tried to withdraw money but never even touched her cash. The gunman took the money directly out of the machine.
"It's depressing, for starters, but I'm not scared," one resident said.
Both robberies happened just over a week ago. The first took place at 9:30 a.m. on May 28 at a Comerica Bank on Meyers Road near McNichols Road.
"To want to rob someone in broad daylight, especially these days, because you just don't know who's packing, as well," a resident said.
The man was forced at gunpoint to hand the cash over.
"That's wrong," another resident said. "I work hard for money, and he should find a job. Period."
The second robbery happened around 9:30 p.m. on May 28 at a Bank of America just 3.5 miles away, at W. 8 Mile Road and Livernois Avenue.
"A lot of folks are doing a lot of crazy stuff these days," a man said. "So I just kind of keep my eyes open."
The woman was withdrawing money when the gunman walked up from behind her vehicle and took the money out of the ATM before walking away.
"Everyplace you go, you're on camera, and the fact that people don't care -- wow," a man said.
Police describe the gunman as a black man in his 40s, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, with a medium build. He was wearing a fisherman's hat, a striped shirt and dark-colored shorts.
