DETROIT – Three-year-old Elijah Walker, of Detroit was shot and killed Monday while playing with a gun at a home in the 16000 block of Eastwood Avenue near Kelly Road on the city's east side.
Local 4 has learned the toddler and an 11-year-old boy were playing with a gun in a yard when the 11-year-old shot the 3-year-old in the face.
Police say one of the boys had found the gun.
"It looks like an accidental shooting of a 3-year-old. We've got the mother, we conveyed the mother to the hospital. We've recovered a weapon," said Asst. Police Chief Steve Dolunt.
Asst. Police Chief Lashinda Stair said the weapon is a handgun.
"The (children) were in the rear of the family home ... we're not clear on exactly what happened right now, but the 3-year-old was shot in the area of the head. The mother placed the call to 911," said Stair.
Neighbors heard the gunshot.
"We thought it was a firecracker, though," said Barbara Willis.
Willis was cutting her lawn across the street. She ran when she heard screaming.
"I was crying because I had never seen anything like that ... I will keep (his family) in my prayers," she said.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page for funeral expenses. You can donate right here.
