DETROIT – The 5-year-old girl who was shot in the head during a road rage incident on Detroit’s west side last month is making an incredible recovery.
Maurbrya Cheatham was the only person injured in the shooting that happened Feb. 20 after her family was rear-ended on their way to Footlocker.
The hit-and-run driver took off and the family attempted to catch up. Later, they happened to cross paths with that driver and someone fired shots.
“All I could think about was ‘cover your girls, make sure your girls are OK,” Maurbrya’s father Bryan Cheatham said. “It just happened so instantly.”
Bryan Cheatham shot back and when bullets stopped flying he realized Maurbrya had been hit.
The bullet was lodged in the back of her brain. Maurbrya underwent two surgeries and spent nearly a month in the hospital.
“Her doctor said he had never seen anything like this,” Maurbrya’s mother Maureya Cheatham said.
Maurbrya said she wants to go to Disney World and meet Cinderella because she is her favorite princess.
Two men are in custody and authorities are looking for a third. The FBI has taken over the investigation.
