UPDATE: Wayne State police officer on life support after being shot in head
"The officer is out of surgery," said Wayne State University President M. Roy Wilson. "He is in recovery, his family's with him now. He's got a tough road to climb, but we just have to see what happens."
"It's a very traumatic episode, so right now we're just hoping for the best," said Wayne State University police Chief Anthony Holt. "The best news we've received so far is that the officer has come out of surgery, he's in recover, and we just have to wait and see."
Detroit police Chief James Craig said Rose was near the Woodbridge Estates around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday investigating car robberies. Officers had been in the area Monday night for complaints of navigation devices and other items being stolen from cars.
Rose let other police know he was in the area, and when another Wayne State officer arrived, he found Rose lying face-down on the ground with a gunshot wound, Craig said.
"It's very troubling," Craig said. "It's a sad day, and we're just hoping for his recovery."
Craig said the five-year Wayne State police veteran is currently undergoing surgery at Detroit Receiving Hospital.
Rose's gun was missing, but has been recovered, authorities said.
Police are searching for Deangelo Davis, who has been named a person of interest in the case.
The suspect in the case is described as a black man in his 40s who is 5 feet 11 inches tall with a slight build and a full beard. He was wearing a white T-shirt with white and black lettering, a skull cap and a brown jacket.
Police released a picture of the suspect's bicycle, calling it "unique" and saying that they think it could help someone identify the man. The bicycle is blue with yellow and black lettering and stripes. There is an old chain wrapped around the bicycle underneath the seat cushion.
You can see a picture of the bicycle below. Anyone with information is asked to call Detroit police.
Craig said there is a "massive manhunt" underway for the suspect. Michigan State Police, Detroit police and Wayne State University police are at the scene.
Craig did not release further information about the officer's condition.
"We do not have a condition," Dolunt said. "He was conveyed to Detroit Receiving Hospital. We have officers on the scene, we are canvassing the area. All available units are out there, and we are praying for the officer."
A woman who lives near the scene said she heard three shots from her home. She said they were so loud she jumped out of her bed and onto the floor and stayed there for close to five minutes before she heard police sirens coming.
She said she didn't hear any sounds of fighting from her home.
Local 4's Tim Pamplin and Rod Meloni are on the scene.
