ORCHARD LAKE VILLAGE, Mich. – A bicyclist is dead after being struck by a car, police said.
It happened around 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Commerce Road in Orchard Lake Village.
Police told Local 4 that a car and the bicyclist were traveling in the same direction along a curve on the road when the accident happened near Dow Ridge Road.
The bicyclist, a man in his 50s, was killed.
Some people who live in the area said Commerce Road needs sidewalks and that it's dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians. Others said there was more traffic than usual because of the St. Mary's fair.
Police said the cyclist was wearing a helmet. The driver was not taken into custody or charged.
The accident remains under investigation.
Residents said there are wetlands around that stretch of road, which is under environmental protection. This is why sidewalks are not being built on Commerce Road. Residents said it has been an ongoing issue for years.
