WATERFORD, Mich. – The body of a 15-year-old swimmer who went missing in Cass Lake Saturday was recovered early Sunday.
Mohammad Wutwut, of Dearborn, was swimming with his family at 7 p.m. at Dodge State Park. Investigators said he was about 1,000 yards from the shore when he went underwater and disappeared.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the body was discovered about 300 feet from the shore in about 9 feet of water at 12:54 a.m. A relative at the scene identified the body as Wutwut, police said.
Police said Wutwut, who was not wearing a life jacket, was in the water with at least one other teen.
Family members said Wutwut, who was 6 feet 1 inch tall and 200 pounds, could not swim.
There’s a 60-foot drop-off where the dive and rescue teams searched Saturday night. Crews used sonar boats that allowed them to see at night as they looked. There were weeds and zero visibility in the area his body was found, police said.
Family and friends said they are stunned by Wutwut's death, calling him an all-American kid who loved two things: working out and football. They said he would spend hours at the gym, on the football field and with friends.
Family members said Wutwut dreamed of playing football professionally.
Wutwut also played basketball at Hype Athletics Community in Dearborn Heights.
Wutwut leaves behind parents, seven brothers and sister and an extended family.
Authorities said the family visited the park often.
A GoFundMe has been set up to assist the family with funeral and burial expenses.
