ALGONAC, Mich. – St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon announced Tuesday night the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team recovered the body of a swimmer who was reported missing Monday afternoon.
The body of 37-year-old Darren Cogbill was found shortly after 7 p.m., Tuesday night, after he and three others jumped from a boat into the St.Clair River.
Witnesses say Cogbill surfaced once and then disappeared.
Those in the area were unable to find Cogbill, and placed a call to 911 around 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Firefighters from the Algonac, Clary township and Ira Township Fire Departments responded first before turning the incident over to the Dive Team, who searched for Cogbill until late Monday night.
Around 9 a.m., divers set back out in a boat equipped with a sonar buoy which pulled behind the moving boat, covering areas on the St.Clair River where Cogbill might be.
Cogbill’s body was later found with the use of sonar technology in about 45 feet of water not far from the entrance of the Algonac Harbour Boat Club.
Family members positively identified the body as Cogbill, and his body was sent to McLaren Port Huron Hospital, where authorities say an autopsy will be conducted.
