DETROIT – Over the years, Belle Isle, once one of Detroit's true gems, has fallen into various levels of decay, but those days are now over.
Big changes will begin to the park Monday, when the state takeover goes into effect. It means improvements, but it also means fees.
As a result of Belle Isle becoming a state park, drivers will now pay an $11 yearly fee with license renewals, but there is no fee for pedestrians, bicyclists or public transportation riders.
The city estimates saving $6 million yearly as a part of the deal and the state is promising improvements, including new restrooms, lighting and landscapjng, paving projects and restoration of landmarks.
There are still some Detroiters who worry about the park's future and whether everyone will be able to enjoy its beauty.
