DETROIT – Detroit police officers will soon have a new weapon with them while on patrol, and it’s one that is expected to save lives.
Officers will soon be equipped with electronic control weapons, otherwise known as Tasers.
The city allowed officers to use Tasers in the past, but after there was an injury, they took Tasers off the table.
"It is our hope that every sworn personnel in operations has a Taser, including our detectives," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig.
The Board of Detroit Police Commissioners unanimously approved Craig's request for Tasers. This does not need to be approved by the City Council.
