Commerce Township woman helps save man who crashed into Union Lake

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Commerce Township woman saved a man early Sunday after he crashed his car into Union Lake.

"I was just out finishing up the night and put out the fire when I heard the screeching of the tires, the water splash," Nicole Waugh said.

She called 911 and told the operator where to go before she hung up and ran to the car that had crashed into the lake.

"I couldn't find a way in so I had to hop the fence," she said.

The car was upside down and sinking. Waugh said the water was up to her waist as she tried to get the car's door open.

When rescue crews arrived, she was worried they wouldn't see her because she was low, so she ran up the hill, spraining her ankle in the process. She's off crutches now, but she will need physical therapy.

Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash.
