Coyote attacks on family pets on rise on Grosse Ile

GROSSE ILE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Several Grosse Ile families are heartbroken after their dogs were killed by coyotes. Residents said the attacks have become more common in the last few weeks.

Kim Esposito, a resident of Grosse Ile, held her Shi Zhu tight after her other Shi Zhu was attacked and killed by a coyote.

Esposito said she let Chewie out  to use the yard when she heard a yelp. They later found their beloved pet’s remains behind their house in the woods.

Esposito said the coyote jumped the fence that surrounds their house and grabbed Chewie before jumping back over and running into the woods.

Several other reports of coyote attacks on dogs have surfaced in the last few weeks and experts think it may have to do with the booming population of coyotes on the island.

Animal Control said four dogs were killed on the island in the last two weeks.
