Detroit police dealing with recent violence

DETROITDetroit police say they're working to deal with a recent violence that's included 36 shootings and four slayings since late last week.

"Do we anticipate this? No. I believe 11 shootings happened in one day, in one precinct. Five in one spot," said Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt. "We've had times when you go, ‘How could this possibly happen?' And then we've had other weekends when nothing happens and you go, ‘How could this possibly happen?'"

Five people, including an 11-year-old girl, were hurt Saturday at a home on Strathmoor Street when a group of armed men opened fire.

Kareem Taylor was in the neighborhood when the gunshots started. "He told me to get down, they're reloading, they're reloading, and then they started shooting again," Taylor said.

The 11-year-old, Angel, was shot in the leg as she stood outside. A 3-year-old inside the home was hurt by glass that shattered from the bullets.

This week, 41-year-old Johnny Clyburn, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, was shot and killed at his home on Woodhall Street.

"Ten percent of the people in the city drive 90 percent of the crime, the havoc and the mayhem," Dolunt said. "I think it's a combination of the nice weather, the holiday, four-day weekend, and maybe alcohol."

Dolunt said overall, crime is down in the city, but particularly violent stretches is a reminder that more still needs to be done.
