Dog shot to death after attacking Detroit officers, running at children near elementary school

Police say dog charged at officer, forcing police to use deadly force

DETROIT – A dog was shot and killed Monday afternoon after attacking police officers near an elementary school on Detroit's east side.

Officers said they "terminated the threat" after the dog was running at students from nearby Wayne Elementary School. When police arrived, they said the dog started charging at them.

The dog was shot in a resident's backyard.

"The dog was very aggressive," Capt. Eric Decker said. "We requested a dog stick. We brought one out. Unfortunately, the dog was just too aggressive, charged at officers and unfortunately an officer did have to fire shots and destroy the animal."

Police said they did everything they could to corral the animal, but when it started charging at officers, they had to use deadly force.

No officers or children were injured.
