DETROIT – A Detroit police commander was given a special honor Thursday for going well beyond the call of duty.
Cmdr. Whitney Walton of the Fourth Precinct was honored in Southwest Detroit because of her efforts to keep the streets safe and make an impact on the community.
Every year, Mana De Metro Detroit awards women in the community with the Adelita Award, which aims to send young women in Detroit to college. The winner is awarded for doing more than their jobs in the community, including helping others.
Walton received the award for her work in the Fourth Precinct, where she knows young women look up to her.
"It's incredible," Walton said.
