Driver charged in crash on Lodge Freeway that killed pregnant woman

70-year-old suspect facing misdemeanor

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A 70-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fiery crash last November on the Lodge Freeway that killed a pregnant woman.

Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper said the man is facing a moving violation causing death charge, which is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year of jail time and a fine.

Kayla Lucille White died Nov. 11 when her Jeep Liberty was rear-ended in the northbound lanes of the freeway near Telegraph Road.

The Liberty collided with two other vehicles before overturning and catching fire.

White was about to have a baby boy.

"She could not wait. We were going down. Everything was ready. She had a name picked out -- Braedin Joseph," White's mother, Susan, told Local 4.

Michigan State Police said the man who hit her was simply "not paying attention," and that speed, alcohol and cellphone use were not factors in the crash.

The man is awaiting arraignment.
