DETROIT – Detroit police said a man in a wheelchair on a sidewalk and a driver were killed when two cars collided on the city's west side.
The crash happened at the intersection of Greenfield Road and Chalfonte Street.
Police said a female driver in a gold Chevy Malibu ran a stop sign and struck a maroon 2003 Chevy Impala at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday, sending that car up onto the sidewalk. The collision killed the 51-year-old driver of the Impala and Anthony Bailes, a 49-year-old man in a wheelchair on the sidewalk.
The driver of the Malibu, a 25-year-old woman, fled the scene but was later identified at a hospital, where she is in serious condition. Police said she drove herself there and was later arrested.
Family and friends of Bailes gathered in disbelief outside his apartment Sunday.
The 49-year-old was diagnosed with lupus many years ago and used a wheelchair to get around.
Members of Bailes' family said they don't consider his death an accident and they're hoping the woman understands what she took from them.
"She needs to look within herself and find a heart," one of Bailes' family members said.
A 5-year-old boy in the Impala is in stable condition at a hospital.
