CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A local woman has some advice for DTE Energy users after a computer glitch overcharged some customers multiple times.
Rachel Bolle, who was charged eight extra times, is warning customers to check their bank account.
The only time many people stop and think about how much they depend on electricity is when the power goes off.
"I was shocked," Bolle said. "Like, I was seeing the wrong thing. This can't be happening."
Bolle said she didn't do anything to increase charges inside her Clinton Township home, but the bill jumped all on its own.
"I saw eight overcharges of DTE, $135," she said.
The eight charges were for $135 each, so instead of paying $135, $1,215 was taken out of her checking account. DTE admits a computer glitch duplicating charges several times is to blame.
Customers who made payments on Aug. 19 or Aug. 22 could be affected, and the company hopes to reverse or reimburse the charges within 48 hours.
Although the chargeswill be fixed soon, Bolle said her confidence might not be.
"It's just the idea that my security, my trust in the computer system just went out the window," Bolle said. "I just want everyone to check their bank. Don't always be so trusting. There could be a glitch."
