Fairlane Mall-goers recall tense, uncertain moments after shots fired

Police say argument between men prompted one of them to fire gunshots inside mall

DEARBORN, Mich. – An argument between two men got way out of hand Monday when one of them pulled out a gun and fired shots inside Fairlane Mall in Dearborn.

It's a trip to Victoria's Secret that Yalontae Washington will never forget.

"I was just looking around trying to see what was going on and then a security guard came out of nowhere and he was like, 'Go in the store!' He made the Victoria's Secret employee open the gate and made all of us go in the store. Then they told us to go straight to the back, so we were basically sitting there in the back and one of the other customers got a call and someone said someone was shooting," said Washington.

Huddling in the back, they used their phones to see what was going on.

"Everybody was calm at first but like an hour and a half went by and no one was telling us anything, so a couple of girls got a little rowdy in there with the Victoria's Secret employees and it got a little crazy in Victoria's Secret but the security guards came in there and they calmed everything down," said Washington.

Customers and employees were hiding in backrooms, bathrooms and dressing rooms as security asked everybody to pull the gates on the store down.

"We heard shots and then we ran to the back and they told us to lock everything down. We just sat in the back, we had a few customers, and we hung out in the back until they released everybody," said Larry Washington, an employee at the mall.

Police said it was an argument between two men near a jewelry store that turned violent. One man fired shots.

Rosemarie Huguley heard them just as clear as a bell.

"I was walking through the mall and all I heard was two gunshots," she said. "I noticed everybody running and then I ran into a store. A little panicked at first, you know, when you first hear the gunshots, when the shots first went off."

Dearborn police have not made any arrests.
