DETROIT – A Detroit grandfather is dealing with heartbreak and hope after his two granddaughters were involved in a violent high-speed crash Thursday on the city's west side.
One of his granddaughters was among two killed in the crash, as a Camaro slammed into their car. His other granddaughter is seriously injured and needs surgery.
There were four people inside the Malibu when the Camaro crashed into it. Police said the driver of the Camaro was OK after the crash and seem unfazed.
But police said the driver was speeding when the Camaro hit the Malibu, killing Angel Careathers, 21, and her boyfriend, Zachary, 21.
Careathers' sister, Krystal, 14, and Zachary's sister were also in the Malibu, which was parked as the four prepared to walk their dog. Now Krystal and Zachary's sister are seriously injured.
"I am forgiving," Dr. Timothy Careathers said. "I do know that this is an act of the devil himself."
Timothy Careathers said the choice made by the Camaro driver to speed at 80 mph in a parking lot took his granddaughters' lives and impacted two families.
"Too many guys are driving muscle cars," Timothy Careathers said. "Too many guys and gals are blowing the sunroof off with loud music and not paying attention to our public officials.
"We are going to hold this guy accountable and utilize him as an example of evidence of what will occur, the consequences that will occur if this happens again in our city."
