DETROIT – An air of grief hangs like fog inside the east-side Detroit home where 10-year-old Tony Campbell was accidentally shot to death.
"It's so hard," said Campbell's uncle, who spoke Thursday to Local 4's Shawn Ley.
On Monday night, Campbell was at home on Roxbury Street with his older brother and some cousins. They had been left in the care of Campbell's mother's boyfriend, 34-year-old Clifton Shortie Jr., while she was at work.
Police said Shortie left the home at some point and returned to find Campbell had been accidentally shot in the face with a shotgun.
Two police officers rushed Campbell to a hospital, but he died.
The boy's mother was too distraught to speak to Local 4, but her best friend said the family is still planning funeral arrangements.
Police have not said who exactly was handling the gun when Campbell was shot. However, Shortie has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse for failing to secure a loaded weapon and for being a convicted felon in possession of a fire arm.
He was arraigned Thursday and is being held on a $75,000 bond.
