Family's dog stabbed during attempted home invasion on Detroit's west side

Dog stabbed at family's home in Brightmoor neighborhood

DETROIT – A family said their dog was stabbed Monday when they left for a Labor Day cook out and someone tried to break into their home on Detroit's west side.

The family returned to their home in the Brightmoor neighborhood on Bramell near Fenkell Avenue to find their beloved dog had been seriously injured.

"Gracie was right back here in the backyard," Brooke Bruno said.

Bruno said she found Gracie lying on the ground in the backyard with wounds all over her body.

Who would hurt a dog that was tied to her leash in her own fenced-in backyard? Bruno said they are new to the Brightmoor neighborhood and have been having issues with people knocking on the door at all hours.

When it looked like nobody was at the home Monday, she believes someone tried to break in and surprised Gracie out back. The family said the potential home invader stabbed the dog.

The only all-animal hospital for Gracie is in Romeo. That's where she is, and she might lose her leg for trying to protect her family's home.
