DETROIT – Detroit police say three men wanted for a crime spree early Monday morning that included the fatal shooting of a 31-year-old man have been arrested.
Police Chief James Craig made the announcement Tuesday, saying investigators had worked hard around-the-clock to "bring closure" and find the "three-man crew."
Craig said he couldn't release details on how or where the suspects were found, but that more information would be released when they are formally charged.
The suspects are accused in two carjackings and one attempted carjacking that all happened between 1:50 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Monday.
The three men allegedly first stole a light blue minivan at Grand River and Heritage and then tried to steal a Ford Mustang that was at a gas station on Gratiot Avenue near St. Aubin. The driver of the mustang, Gregory Whitfield, tried to drive away from the carjackers but was shot and killed.

The men then allegedly then stole a black Impala at St. Joseph and Mitchell and pistol-whipped the victims.
Craig said that while violent crimes create fear in the community and it's not a good idea to get gas overnight, the police department is making progress on catching crooks.
"We will relentlessly follow up, find you and arrest you. We've done it time and again and will continue to do it. The message is: not here. Not in Detroit. Not anymore," he said.
