GROSSILE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Chuck Chessor thought his family’s long time pet, an 11-year-old Yorkie named Louie, was safe when they left him with a pet sitter on the other side of Grosse Ile.
They returned to learn that Louie was attacked and killed by a coyote.
Chessor says coyotes have become so prevalent in his area, they can easily be found sitting in driveways of Grosse Ile homes.
“Without him around, every little thing now reminds you of him, whether a door opens a certain way you expect that reaction of him barking or his feet running through the floor, it’s been a challenging week for sure,” Chessor said.
“We need to start being proactive or something worse is going to happen here.”
Coyotes crossed the ice during the winter are are now land locked, breeding and hungry.
Animal control is meeting with the Department of Natural Resources to see what steps can be taken and to see if a 'coyote cull' is necessary.
Grosse Ile Township Animal Control says there were several coyote attacks this week including another fatal attack of a dog on the other end of the island.
