Hazel Park man with 53 license suspensions crashes after police chase in Detroit

DETROIT – A man who police said stole from a Ferndale convenience store allegedly crashed into a light pole while attempting to flee police, according to a report from the Oakland Press.

Police said the man had numerous suspensions and traffic convictions.

The incident began at a CVS store at 900 W Nine Mile Road near Livernois when employees of the store noticed the man was behaving strangely.

The report from the Oakland Press said employees studied surveillance video and noticed that the man was stealing items from the store shelves.

Police were notified by employees, and found the man driving away from the scene in a silver 2000 Buick LeSabre. 

Ferndale police attempted a traffic stop, but the man fled the scene, eventually making his way into Detroit at a high rate of speed.

The Oakland Press reports that the man then ran a red light and spun out when attempting to avoid an oncoming vehicle at the intersection.

Police on scene said the man crashed into a light pole and officers arrested the man, adding that he smelled of alcohol.

Ferndale police said the 57-year-old man already held 53 suspensions on his driver’s license, and police suspect he was intoxicated when he crashed.

The man’s lengthy criminal history includes numerous driving infractions including prior charges of fleeing police and two other driving while intoxicated convictions.

The man was charged with three coutns of fleeing and eluding police, driving while license is suspended and retail fraud.
