Westland hit-and-run witness: Driver stopped, shrugged, drove away

Westland woman killed, police search for driver

WESTLAND, Mich. – A witness has come forward with shocking details about the hit-and-run accident that killed a woman in Westland on Monday night.

A witness who saw the accident told Westland Police that Marcia Japowicz, 53, was hit by a burgundy or red Chrysler Pacifica driven by a white man in his 50s with a gray mustache and neatly trimmed beard.

The driver and the witness approached the victim to check on her when she was run over by another car. The witness stated that the Pacifica driver looked at the witness, shrugged, got back into his car and drove away.

Police say the accident occurred at about 8 p.m. and that Japowicz was hit by at least four vehicles that did not stop.

Friends and family gathered on Tuesday night at a Taco Bell in Westland, Japowicz's place of employment for 26 years, for a candlelight vigil.

The family has set up this GoFundMe page for anyone interested in donating for funeral expense.
