DETROIT – A homeless kitten was saved by a veterinarian at the Michigan Humane Society after being found in a box outside of the MHS Mackey Center for Animal Care in Detroit on June 1.
Barbie the kitten was found with a rubber band wrapped tightly around her abdomen, which caused her body to grow irregularly.

"There was only enough room for her urethra and colon to pass through, but there was no room for any other organs," said Dr. Amy Koppenhoefer, MHS shelter veterinarian. "I knew that the surgery was going to be difficult so I consulted with a surgical specialist."
Koppenhoefer took Barbie to the Animal Surgical Center of Michigan to look into surgery.
"Barbie’s surgery was very specialized and difficult, but these types of surgeries are not uncommon at MHS," said David Williams, MHS chief operations officer. "We see animals come to us from a wide variety of situations, and many need to have specialized surgeries to ensure they will be happy, healthy and ready to find their forever homes. Our veterinarians are top-notch and it’s because of their skills and donations from the public that we are able to save so many animal lives."
Barbie's surgery was successful and doctors said she found a loving home.
