REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – An explosion Sunday evening destroyed a home in Redford Township.
The explosion occurred on Gaylord Street near West 7 Mile Road around 6 p.m.
Neighbors said a concussive wave went through the neighborhood, blowing out windows, rattling doors and forcing people to the ground after the home on the street was vaporized in the gas explosion, leaving nothing but the foundation.
"I thought, 'Oh my God. Did a plane crash?' It was so loud and so intense," a neighbor said.
Firefighters told Local 4 News the debris field is 1,000 feet and six inches deep. There is siding from the home wrapped up in the trees and rubble form the home in neighbor's yards.
"I heard like a little boom and then I heard the atomic bomb kind of boom sound," another neighbor said. "The whole wall was shooting at us. I was like, 'What's going on?' I thought it was like a bomb going off."
Firefighters confirmed one man was injured with significant burns and was transported to the hospital. He is expected to live.
The windows of neighboring homes were broken in the explosion.
