Infant killed in northwest Detroit house fire

DETROIT – Detroit police say a 7-month-old girl was killed Saturday afternoon in a house fire on the city's northwest side.

The fire started around 4:30 p.m. in the 19900 block of Lindsey Street, near Eight Mile Road and Southfield.

Six people were inside the home when the fire started, and the young girl wasn't able to escape in time.

Eijh Lowe lives a few blocks away from the home that caught fire. When he learned a baby was trapped inside, he did something not everyone would do.

Lowe said he searched frantically for the baby as flames took over the front rooms.

The family identified the victim as 7-month-old Michaela Walker.

A number of children and at least one adult were able to escape the fire. The family said Michaela’s mother was at work at the time and a friend was looking after the children.
