Judge Vonda Evans scolds attorney after he accuses her of not being prepared for sentencing

DETROIT – Judge Vonda Evans was expected to sentence a man found guilty of manslaughter Monday morning but granted the defense attorney request for more time.

The attorney asked for a day. Evans gave him an hour.

Tywaun Coakley ran over 81-year-old Robert Ybarra in July. The Army veteran suffered broken bones, cracked ribs and a head injury that ultimately ended his life the next day.

Coakley was convicted of manslaughter by a jury in December.

Coakley’s attorney, Terry Price, said he needed more time to review pre-sentence report.

“I need to look at the pre-sentence report with more depth,” Price said. “I’m not satisfied with the guideline scores and I think I may need to file some written objections.”

The judge responded:

“I’m more than satisfied Mr. Price that you’re training will allow you to review those guidelines and to make whatever corrections that you want,” Evans said.

Price asked for a day to assess the case.

“We’ll it’s not going to take that long,” Evans said. “Because you don’t have that long to go over this report. Now I will give you until 12:30.”

“That’s not enough time,” Price said.

“We’ll then you make it enough time,” Evans said.

Price then told Evans that she didn’t have enough time to review the report and she responded with vigor.
