CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Macomb County Sheriff’s deputy’s quick response potentially saved his life in an early morning crash on I-94, Monday, May 6,

The crash happened at about 12:30 a.m. in Clinton Township, near Little Mack Avenue. Deputy Lukas Gjelaj was dispatched to the area to help Clinton Township police shut down the westbound lanes of I-94 due to a crash.

According to authorities, Gjelaj was placing flares on the freeway to divert traffic to Harper Road when the deputy saw a white vehicle speeding toward them.

Gjelaj jumped out of the way when they realized the white vehicle was not going to stop. The white Kia Sorrento rear-ended the patrol vehicle, which was parked in the far left lane with its emergency lights on.

Both vehicles were totaled in the collision.

The driver and passenger of the Kia -- a 19-year-old and 18-year-old -- were taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation. Authorities said they did not show any signs of impairment.

Michigan’s “Move Over” law requires drivers to slow down to 10 mph below the posted speed limit and, if they can, yield their lane.
