TAYLOR, Mich. – Local 4 has been following a story in Taylor for years regarding towing.
The city has been discussing a contract that it has with “Area Towing”. Residents claim the company charges exorbitant prices for its services.
The city’s mayor even tried to rescind the contract with “Area Towing” however a court ruled that move was illegal.
On Tuesday (May 6) night, the city council again held a discussion, which got slightly heated.
It didn’t take long to hear some of the complaints residents in Taylor and surrounding communities have been making about outrageous fees associated with Area Towing and Robert’s Spill Response and Restoration.
“I got a $17,000 bill. I thought it was spam,” said Renee Stallions
“For a long time now, there have been many complaints that the current contractor that we currently use has not been following the guidelines that the city was led to believe they would, as far as pricing goes,” said Daniel Wallace.
City council members couldn’t find common ground on the matter, resulting in much back-and-forth amongst themselves.
In the end, the motion to rescind the 2016 resolution totally failed.
“It’s extremely disappointing. This area towing issue has been an issue for a very long time. We’re talking well over 20 years,” said Stallions.
“This just doesn’t make sense. Nobody else in the whole metropolitan knows who their towing company is except us. It’s an embarrassment for Taylor, and I’m tired of it,” Wallace said.
City council members may potentially look for another towing company. Some were not in favor of not having a towing contract if they let “Area Towing” go.
