Detroit man charged with murder after high-speed chase kills 71-year-old woman

Anthony Eugene-Douglas Grier, Jr., 33, from Detroit, was charged with second-degree murder, police officer-fleeing-first-degree, and police officer-assaulting/resisting/obstructing in connection with his alleged driving of a vehicle that killed a 71-year-old Wendy Drew. (Local 4)

WARREN, Mich. – Anthony Eugene-Douglas Grier, Jr., 33, from Detroit, was charged with second-degree murder, police officer-fleeing-first-degree, and police officer-assaulting/resisting/obstructing in connection with his alleged driving of a vehicle that killed a 71-year-old Wendy Drew.

The incident occurred on Saturday, May 24, at 9:30 p.m., when police stated that Grier Jr. was observed driving a Chrysler 300 at approximately 70 miles per hour in a 40-mile-per-hour zone on Van Dyke Avenue in Warren.

Officials said the pursuit ended when the vehicle allegedly driven by Grier Jr. entered the intersection of South Van Dyke Avenue and 9 Mile Road, where it struck a vehicle traveling east.

Warren police said they attempted a traffic stop with their lights and sirens activated.

Officials alleged that the Chrysler 300 failed to stop, drove on the sidewalk and in the middle turn lane, disobeyed numerous traffic lights, and traveled at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour in an area with posted speed limits ranging from 35 to 40 miles per hour.

Police said the pursuit ended when the vehicle allegedly driven by Grier Jr. entered the intersection of South Van Dyke Avenue and 9 Mile Road where it struck a vehicle traveling east.

Officials said the Chrysler 300 then struck a second vehicle. Drew, who was the lone occupant in the first vehicle, was transported to a Metro Detroit hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Police said the lone occupant of the second vehicle was uninjured.

Officials said that a man was observed running from the area of the vehicle involved in the incident.

Police said the man was taken into custody and identified as Grier Jr.

Based on a warrant request by the Warren Police Department, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Grier Jr. with:

Count 1: Homicide-murder-second degree, life, or any term of years.

Count 2: Police officer-fleeing-first degree-vehicle code, 15 years and/or $10,000.

Count 3: Police officer-assaulting/resisting/obstructing, two years and/or $2,000.

After deliberating, it was determined that those three charges are the maximum possible offenses available under the law based on the evidence presented to date.

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Grier Jr. was arraigned in the 37th District Court of Warren, where a judge denied bail and remanded him to custody.

The probable cause conference for Grier Jr. is scheduled for Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 9:30 a.m., with a preliminary exam to follow on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 9:30 a.m.
