Car lands on parked vehicles after potential chase on Detroit’s west side

Neighbors say the vehicle was being chased before crashing through a fence onto two parked cars

DETROIT – A car crashed through a fence and landed on top of other vehicles in a residential neighborhood on Detroit’s west side.

It happened around noon, Thursday, June 4, near the intersection of Warwick Street and Whitlock Avenue.

Neighbors said law enforcement was chasing the vehicle before it broke through a fence, struck a decorative wishing well, and came to rest on top of two parked cars in a home’s driveway.

The driver was impaled through the chest with a metal fence post.

Video obtained from a neighbor shows firefighters rescuing the driver from the smashed car shortly after the crash, then placing the driver on a stretcher with the metal pole still protruding from the chest.

When Local 4 arrived, ICE agents were also observed at the scene.

The car has since been towed, but a large number of ICE agents and Detroit police remain at the scene.

Detroit police directed media inquiries to the Department of Homeland Security for more information on what led up to the crash.

‘My truck was brand new’

The two vehicles belonged to Dajaun Matkins, who was visibly frustrated by the damage to his property.

“I’m irritated because my car, that’s a $20,000 ’87 Monte,” Matkins said. “My truck was brand new. I’m irritated.”

He expressed relief that no children were hurt in the crash, noting they frequently play in the area.

“My nieces and stuff be out here playing and all that type of stuff,” Matkins said. “My niece could’ve been out here.”
