VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Belleville man was charged with arson after admitting to burning down his ex-girlfriend's house on Oct. 12, but that charge was dropped by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
Theresa Mayo said Jeffery Rochon, 30, who is the father of her two daughters, left her voicemails threatening to kill her and burn down her house.
The fire started just after midnight. No one was injured in the fire but the home was destroyed.
Police have surveillance video of Rochon buying a gas can, gas and other evidence 15 minutes before the fire. It was handed over to the Prosecutor's Office along with Rochon's confession that he set the fire to get back at Mayo for accusing him of abusing their girls.
Rochon was charged with arson and held on a $500,000 bond. Mayo said the Prosecutor's Office didn't even alert her that Rochon was out on bond. The prosecutors later dropped the charge.
"I'm scared to death," Mayo said. "You let him out of jail. Now, what do I do? He knows where I'm at. He has a tether on. Okay. What's that going to do? By the time he comes to me, kills me, cops aren't going to be there."
Sources say Van Buren Township police are furious that the arson charge was dropped. Mayo wants to talk to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
"I'm so scared for my life, my children's lives," Mayo said. "I'm trying to get in touch with you. If you only knew what I'm going through, it's heartbreaking."
