DETROIT – A man was shot and killed in downtown Detroit as he left one of the city's most popular spots.
The downtown area was busy Friday night with people going to restaurants and out walking, and some people heard comments about the city's fresh feel. People walking to their cars then were stunned as they watched bullets fly and a man get shot to death.
"Oh, it was terrible. Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop and they spun off," said Cory Edge.
Edge was back downtown Saturday to retrieve his car and to recount the shocking scene that unfolded right in front of him: A car pulled up, and armed men got out and started wildly firing as they walked to an SUV, hitting parked cars and hitting their target right in the head.
"I love this city but have never seen anything like that before," Edge said.
Edge saw the victim minutes earlier with friends. They were enjoying themselves inside 1701 Executive Cigar Bar at Cadillac Square and Randolph.
Inside the bar the victim got into an argument with five other men. As the victim and his friend got into his car at a lot, the men pulled around and started firing, police said. The victim's friend was also armed. He fired back.
Police used plastic cups to mark how many shots were fired. It's unclear if any of the gunmen were hit.
What is clear is anyone walking on Cadillac Square just off Campus Martius at 1:55 a.m. Friday could have been caught in the cross fire. No innocent bystanders were hurt.
People Local 4 spoke with Saturday night said it's important to be aware of your surroundings and that they are still coming downtown.
A group of friends who were headed to the Masonic Temple said a fight between two groups of guys won't stop them from enjoying the nightlife downtown.
Police will be checking the security cameras all over Cadillac Square to see if they got a look at the five suspects and their car. Local 4 is told one gunman had long dreadlocks.
