Man injured in suspected black bear attack in Clare County

GREENWOOD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 46-year-old man was injured Thursday evening in a suspected attack by a black bear in Clare County, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The attack occurred around 7:30 p.m. in Greenwood Township.

The man was hunting porcupine, hiding in a ground blind, when a black bear attacked him from behind. Using a hunting knife, the man stabbed the bear, which scared it off.

The ma was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

The bear is thought to be injured

The DNR was informed and is placing a bear trap in the area.

Michigan has an estimated black bear population of 8,000 to 10,000 bears, 90 percent of which are in the Upper Peninsula.
