Detroit mayor, police chief aim to stop crime at Detroit gas stations

Partnership part of 'Project Green Light Detroit'

DETROIT – In a new effort to reduce carjackings and shootings around the city, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Detroit Police Chief James Craig launched "Project Green Light Detroit" on Monday.

"Project Green Light Detroit" will specifically aim to cut down the crime happening at gas stations in Detroit's neighborhoods, according to a press release.

Duggan and Craig partnered up for a news conference at the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters in Detroit to introduce the project's plan of action, which is using state-of-the-art surveillance technology to connect Detroit gas stations with the Detroit Police Department's Real-Time Crime Center.

After demonstrating the crime-fighting technology, the press conference moved to one of the eight gas stations chosen to be a part of the pilot program, the Marathon gas station, located at 8930 W. McNichols in Detroit.

So far, gas station owners in the city are agreeing to participate in the program.
