MDOT has list of I-94 weekend closures in metro Detroit

DETROIT – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has a list of closures scheduled for this weekend on Interstate 94 in metro Detroit.

From MDOT:

-- Eastbound I-94 is closed between M-39 and Warren Avenue in metro Detroit to make road repairs caused by Wednesday's tanker fire. MDOT crews have been working around the clock since the fire to clear the area, test for contamination, make repairs, and get eastbound I-94 back open to traffic. Road work and maintenance will be consolidated into the same closure on I-94 to save the public time and money.

-- Westbound I-94 will be closed at I-75 (9 p.m. Friday), with traffic detoured via northbound I-75, westbound M-8, southbound M-10, and westbound I-94.

-- Eastbound I-94 will be closed at M-10 (Lodge Freeway), with traffic detoured via southbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway), northbound I-75, and eastbound I-94.

The multiple projects on I-94 will require crews to close eastbound I-94 between M-39 (Southfield Freeway) and Warren Avenue, with only one lane open between Warren Avenue and M-10 (Lodge Freeway), where the freeway is again closed. Motorists can take northbound or southbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) as an alternate route. All of the work is scheduled to be completed by 5 a.m. Monday.

MDOT crews have worked around the clock since Wednesday's tanker fire to remove the charred vehicles, get an emergency contract in place to remove the destroyed concrete, test the soil for contamination, and pour new concrete. That new concrete is expected to be ready for traffic by Monday morning.

While the roadway has been closed for these two projects, additional work is being completed, including repairing issues near Warren Avenue caused by the floods last August. In addition, concrete repair that would have been done in the near future is being addressed now, with street sweeping also taking place.

The cost to replace the concrete damaged from the tanker fire is approximately $160,000,while the cost to repair the flood damage is estimated at approximately $120,000.
