Michigan Amber Alert canceled for Detroit baby Dakota Grimes

DETROIT – An Amber Alert issued Monday morning for 3-month-old Dakota Grimes has been canceled after the Detroit baby was found safe on a porch.

Police said Dakota was sleeping in the back seat of a running white 2006 Chevrolet Impala about 1 a.m. while her father went inside a liquor store on the city's east side. By the time he came out of the store, the car was gone with Dakota presumably still inside. 

Police issued a missing persons report and asked for the public's help in the search for Dakota and the vehicle. Michigan State Police then followed up with the Amber Alert. 

About 7 hours after she first was reported missing, Dakota was found safe on a porch just a mile from where the Impala was stolen. She was handed to medical personnel to be examined. 

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the baby's father is cooperating with police. 

Police believe three men stole the Impala from the liquor store at 16636 Harper Avenue. The Impala had Michigan driver's license plate CPG 8598. Police believe it has damage to its bumper on the rear driver's side. The trunk does not close completely and the driver's side tail light is broken with red tape covering it.

2nd Amber Alert in a week

Last week, Michigan State Police issued an Amber Alert for a missing 7-year-old girl out of Hamburg Township. She and her mother were believed to be traveling with a registered sex offender. 

However, the mother disputed that claim when police caught up to her in Florida. She said she and her daughter had traveled to Florida alone, and told Local 4 an Amber Alert never should have been implemented.
