Fire at Romulus townhouse kills baby, injures 3-year-old; mother arrested

Children were home alone

DETROIT – A 1-year-old girl was killed and a 3-year-old boy was airlifted to the hospital Sunday after a townhouse fire in Romulus, according to police.

The fire happened on Mountain Way near the corner of Eureka and Brandt roads.

The children's mother was arrested because she wasn't home when the fire started, according to authorities. The mother has not been formally charged.

Firefighters found the children in an upstairs bedroom, where the girl was in a bed and the boy was on the floor. The fire started in the bedroom adjacent to where the children were found.

The boy was airlifted to the University of Michigan hospital.

A third child was not in the home at the time of the fire.

Smoke was coming out of a hole in the roof of the townhouse when Local 4 arrived.
