HOWELL, Mich. – Howell Public School announced hiring an interim head coach for the Howell High School hockey boys' team.
Darren Schmitz is the school's new interim coach of the varsity hockey team. The team's season will continue as previously scheduled.

The team's former head coach, Randy Montrose, was fired this week after the school said he allowed his players to partake in hazing. Two other assistant coaches also were fired.
"Mr. Schmitz was a Varsity hockey letter winner for Howell High School hockey (1984 and 1985), All-State Hockey (1985), member of the Howell Athletic Hall of Fame, member of the Compuware National Championships Team (16-17 year olds), and he coached Compuware AAA hockey for four years, winning 16 tournaments in that time," said Athletic Director Dan Hutcheson in a news release.
Schmitz is only an interim coach while the school continues to search and review applications for a permanent position.
