Mother, great-grandfather sentenced in 4-year-old's accidental shooting

DETROIT – The mother and great-grandfather of a 4-year-old boy who found a handgun and shot himself are due in court Monday morning for sentencing.

Andrea L. Drewery, 30, and Joseph Williams, 80, both of Detroit, pleaded guilty to second-degree child abuse and felony firearms violations.

The 4-year-old found his great-grandfather’s handgun Nov. 2 at about 7:45 a.m. at their home in the 14000 block of Terry Street in Detroit and shot himself in the hand.

Police said Williams and Drewery knew that the handgun was unsecured and was accessible to the boy and his younger brother.
